Rays' Snell a lefty thrower but a righty signer

Double-take of the day

Yes, that's hot prospect LHP Blake Snell signing autographs after Monday's workout. And, yes, he's signing right-handed. Snell always writes right-handed. Actually, he does pretty much everything right-handed. "Besides," he said, "throwing a baseball." Those LHPs have their quirks, as Matt Moore plays golf right-handed while doing everything else lefty.

Number of the day

81½ Over-under betting line on Rays wins, per the Bovada online site. That's fourth most in the AL East, with the Red Sox tops at 861/2. Joe Maddon's Cubs are No. 1 overall at 92½.

Quote of the day

"I went deep in the pool."

OF Steven Souza, on taking swings with a foam-covered weight in the pool as part of his injury rehab.

The dish

Today's abbreviated full-squad workout starts at 9:30 a.m. at the Charlotte Sports Park (2300 El Jobean Road) and will last just 1 hour. Admission and parking are free. Driving time from the bay area is 1½-2 hours. Suggested route: Interstate 75 South to Toledo Blade Road. Go west 6½ miles to El Jobean Road (SR 776). Go right 2 miles. Stadium complex is on left. Information: (941) 235-5025.

Heads up

The most important part of today's workout will take part behind closed doors, as 1B coach Rocco Baldelli will lead a meeting on baserunning philosophy and decision-making. The onfield highlight will be batting practice from 10-10:30.

ST. PETERSBURG — Saturday's game got away starting with a leadoff walk in the seventh inning by Rays LHP Jose Alvarado, who was brought in exclusively to face Baltimore's lefty-swinging Seth Smith.

Rays reliever Jumbo Diaz wipes his face as he walks off the mound after the Orioles score four during the seventh inning to give them a 7-3 lead. Diaz was one strike away from working out of the jam before he allowed a two-run double and a two-run homer on back-to-back pitches.
