Rays: Souza is a card, unwittingly

Healthy laughter

Rays OF Steven Souza Jr. is making his way back from an intercostal muscle strain, but that won't stop the Rays from a little good-natured ribbing. The Rays and Orioles had already exchanged lineup cards before Thursday's game, but manager Kevin Cash gave Souza a lineup card and watched him go halfway onto the field before Souza realized the prank.

"It was (an) Oriole lineup card with the bird on it," Cash said. "He proceeded to walk halfway until he realized, 'This isn't the right lineup card.' We had already done the lineups. He came reaching for it, so I said 'Take it.' "

"Wow. Just in the Saladino."

— Rays manager Kevin Cash, a former Gaither High standout, referencing the bay area's top high school baseball tournament, asked if he had ever hit a ball as far as DH Corey Dickerson's home run, which rolled to a stop 569 feet from home plate after landing on the roof of the Rays' player development building.

    1. Saturday's triumph will do little to fortify USF's strength of schedule, but its strength-of-character quotient might have increased.
