Spring training

Rays: Two 70s for Hazleton

Numbers game

The official story is it was just coincidence, but quite a one at that. Joe Maddon of Hazleton, Pa., wears No. 70 for the Rays, and INF Russ Canzler (right) of Hazleton, Pa., showed up Wednesday wearing No. 70 for the Yankees. "It's just a Hazleton thing," Maddon said. "The fact that he's wearing 70 is quite an honor for me."

Joe-cabulary entry of the day

Bombastic: Manager Joe Maddon in describing most of his Rays, save for pitching coach Jim Hickey: "We have the anti-bombastic on this team."

Glad to be of service

LHP David Price was happy to help out Tuesday by talking to Seminole High pitcher Andrew Mills, who is hospitalized recovering from an accidental shooting. Price heard about Mills from OF Desmond Jennings, who is friends with the Warhawk coaches. "It was good to talk to him," Price said. "It definitely meant a lot to him, and at a time like now, anything helps. That kind of thing is easy for us to do."

Who is this Ray?

Father is a minor-league manager for Cardinals. Has played seven positions in majors. Acquired in trade from Angels.
