Quote of the day

"Tying the shoes is toughest. It's hard to tie your shoes with your pinky finger."

Rays 2B Ben Zobrist, on life with a dislocated left thumb

It's the heat, not the humidity

Late afternoon temps in Anaheim were in triple digits, so — at the suggestion of LHP David Price, who it was noted didn't have to be on the field — the Rays took batting practice in shorts. First-pitch temp was 95. Manager Joe Maddon insisted because the humidity was low, "this heat isn't an awful heat."

Such a deal

The promotion of INF Cole Figueroa means all four players acquired from San Diego in the December 2010 deal for SS Jason Bartlett have made the majors. He joins RHP Brandon Gomes, LHP Cesar Ramos and RHP Adam Russell (who was let go after 2011). Bartlett, meanwhile, played only 168 games over parts of two seasons with the Padres before being released — making $9.5 million.
