Roger Mooney's takeaways from Friday's Rays-Orioles game

I've seen a lot of quirky happenings at the Trop, but I don't recall seeing a base hit on a ball that struck the stairway between the A and B ring catwalks. But that's how Cesar Puello recorded a leadoff single in the fourth. It was his sixth hit since becoming a Ray. He'll take it. Looks like a line drive in the box score.

Evan Longoria hit his 20th homer of the season, a solo shot in the fifth. It was the fifth straight year Longoria has homered at least 20 times and the ninth in his 10-year career. Only one other third baseman in major-league history homered with the same consistency: Hall of Famer Eddie Mathews, who hit 20 in 14 consecutive years.

That Alex Cobb nearly shed tears Friday while accepting the Champion Award by the Tampa Bay chapter of the Baseball Writers' Association of America is a sign that even though a big payday awaits Cobb in free agency, it still means a whole heck of a lot to him to be a member of the organization.
