Series preview: Tampa Bay Rays at Boston Red Sox

. Up next

at Red Sox

Tonight-Wednesday

What's new: Not much has changed for the Sox since they split a four-game series with the Rays last week. They lost two of three to Baltimore, they still haven't fired manager Bobby Valentine and they are still a shell of their former team, having parted ways with Kevin Youkilis, Kelly Shoppach, Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez, Nick Punto and injured former Ray Carl Crawford. Plus, DH David Ortiz is on the DL.

Key stat: The Sox have used a franchise record 56 players, with 27 serving time on the DL.

Connections: Rays 1B Carlos Peña played briefly for Boston. … Sox bench coach Tim Bogar worked for the Rays; hitting coach Dave Magadan is a Tampa product.

Series history: Sox lead 9-7 this season, 150-107 overall, 83-44 at Fenway.
