Rays Report

Tampa Bay Rays: David Price celebrating birthday on team's day off; ex-Ray Jonny Gomes willing to help deal with protesters

Yes, a Sunday off

Because of the Republican National Convention welcome party at Tropicana Field tonight, the Rays adjusted their schedule and have a rare Sunday off. It is the first scheduled Sunday off in the majors, not related to an international trip, since 1995, when there was a conflict with a football game in St. Louis.

Today: Off

Next game: Monday, at Rangers, 8:05 p.m. Rays — David Price (16-4, 2.28); Rangers — Derek Holland (8-6, 4.92)

Reaction of the day

The Rays were amused and intrigued by the developments in Boston, which led to the blockbuster trade that sent Josh Beckett, Adrian Gonzalez, Nick Punto and ex-mate Carl Crawford to the Dodgers. "That's crazy," LHP David Price said. "It's taking some pretty good bats from that Boston lineup, so it's good for us."

Quote of the day

"There ain't nothing secret about my service."

Former Ray/current A Jonny Gomes, offering to help if there was an onfield protest.

Occasion of the day

Today is LHP David Price's 27th birthday, though he wasn't sure what the celebration would include beyond an ice cream cake and the team serenading him on tonight's flight to Texas. Price said he didn't realize until a few weeks ago that the team was off on his big day. Had he thought that might have been the reason? "No, but I'm going to start saying that."
