Meaning to Matsui
DH/OF Hideki Matsui said his new number, No. 35, has a special meaning. He said the "3" was a tribute to his mentor and former manager with the Yomiuri Giants, Nagashima, who wore No. 3. He said No. 35 is a nod to RHP Mike Mussina, his former Yankees teammate who won 20 in his final season (2008). Said Matsui: "Hopefully I can end my career with the kind of numbers and the kind of performance as Mussina."

Bet of the day
OF Matt Joyce said he had a blast at the MLB Fan Cave Tuesday, honored to join Yankees CF Curtis Granderson and 2B Robinson Cano and Dodgers OF Matt Kemp at a media event for All-Star Game balloting. Joyce suggested to Granderson they race stock cars, and if he won he'd take the All-Star starting spot. "I think he beat me," Joyce said, laughing. "We raced around a couple times, my car went too fast and fell off the corners. But we had fun with it."
