DH/OF Hideki Matsui said his new number, No. 35, has a special meaning. He said the "3" was a tribute to his mentor and former manager with the Yomiuri Giants, Nagashima, who wore No. 3. He said No. 35 is a nod to RHP Mike Mussina, his former Yankees teammate who won 20 in his final season (2008). Said Matsui: "Hopefully I can end my career with the kind of numbers and the kind of performance as Mussina."

Joyce suggested to Granderson they race stock cars, and if he won he'd take the All-Star starting spot. "I think he beat me," Joyce said, laughing. "We raced around a couple times, my car went too fast and fell off the corners. But we had fun with it."
