Watch for
Bouncing back: RHP James Shields is coming off two straight starts — both losses — in which he has given up 10 hits. But he has fared well against the A's in his career, going 3-1, 4.61 in six starts. The Rays have won each of Shields' past five meetings with Oakland.
In a groove: LHP Josh Outman had his best outing of the season, and his first win, his last time out, allowing three hits and one run in six innings against the Royals. He will be making his first career start against Tampa Bay.
Matchups: Jason Giambi and Jack Hannahan are 0-for-10 against Shields, with Bobby Crosby 2-for-11 and Jack Cust 2-for-12.

RHP Jason Isringhausen said he had only one bus ride during his minor-league assignment at Triple-A Durham, but it was enough. "From Durham to Gwinnett in Atlanta," he said. "It was 3½ hours, it was plenty long, but it was long enough for me to lose plenty of money during it, too. They were all happy about that. … I don't miss those days, no."
Happiest birthday
Most of the team showed up at Carlos Peña's birthday bash and postgame BBQ on Sunday, and he was so touched by the show of team unity he posted a thank-you note on the clubhouse whiteboard. "Best birthday of my life," he said.
