Tampa Bay Rays up next: at Detroit Tigers

.Up next

at Tigers

What's new: The Tigers are getting healthier, with 3B Brandon Inge (broken hand) back in the lineup and 2B Carlos Guillen (calf strain) returning tonight, but they're not getting better. They're pretty much on the outs in the AL Central, nine games behind the White Sox. The more interesting races to follow are 1B Miguel Cabrera's Triple Crown bid and runs at rookie of the year by OFs Austin Jackson and Brennan Boesch.

Key stat: Closer Jose Valverde has converted his past 21 save opportunities and is fourth among AL relievers with a .167 opponents average.

Connections: Rays DH/OF Matt Joyce came from Tigers in Dec. 2008 trade; Detroit OF Ryan Raburn is a Durant High product.

Series history: Rays swept four-game series at Trop; overall, Rays lead 48-45, Tigers lead in Detroit 23-22.
