Tonight-Sunday
What's new: The Jays, despite taking two of three in New York, are a mess, having lost 22 of 29 to drop to the bottom of the American League East. A long disabled list is a big factor. After a string of injuries to pitchers, the Jays have lost several top position players, led by defending home run champ Jose Bautista, out for the season with a wrist injury. Also missing are 3B Brett Lawrie, C J.P. Arencibia and 1B David Cooper. The Jays still have DH Edwin Encarnacion, who ranks among the AL leaders with 34 homers and 89 RBIs. Pitching has been an ongoing problem.
Key stat: The Jays on Wednesday won their first series since July 27-29 vs. Detroit.
Connections: Rays INF Ryan Roberts and C Jose Molina are former Jays; Toronto 3B coach Brian Butterfield is a former Eckerd College assistant.
Series history: Rays lead 9-2 this season, 4-1 in Toronto. Overall, Rays lead 131-119; Jays lead 69-57 in Toronto.
