Throwing puck part of unique training method for Rays' Geltz

Steve Geltz, who grew up in a hockey-mad area near Buffalo, N.Y., says that throwing a hockey puck helps him determine if his release is correct.

What, the puck?

Rays RHP Steve Geltz has one of the most unique baseball training methods because it involves throwing a hockey puck. Growing up near hockey-happy Buffalo, N.Y., Geltz said he found himself playing around with pucks as a kid. He discovered that throwing it — overhand, with two fingers on the side — gave him immediate feedback if his release is correct based on how the puck spins and if it wobbles. Geltz typically throws it only in the offseason but will use it if his mechanics need a tuneup. He broke it out last week, much to the amusement of some Rays mates. "People are like, 'What are you doing?' " Geltz said. "And I'm like, 'Yeah, I throw pucks.' "
