AL Division Series
Athletics (96-66) vs. Tigers (93-69)
Season series: Athletics won 4-3
Today's starters: Tigers — RH Max Scherzer (21-3, 2.90); Athletics — RH Bartolo Colon (18-6, 2.65)
Of note: This is a rematch of last year's ALDS, which Detroit won in five. … Game 1 pits two of the AL's top starting pitchers. Colon was second in the AL in ERA, Scherzer fifth; Scherzer was second in strikeouts, while Colon had the second-best walk rate (to the Rays' David Price). … Detroit's starting rotation had an AL-best 3.44 ERA; Oakland's was second at 3.72. The Tigers may ride their starters hard thanks to a bullpen that was among the league's worst. … The A's, who platoon heavily, can start as many as seven lefties/switch-hitters against Detroit's exclusively right-handed rotation. … The biggest X factor could be the health of Tigers star 3B Miguel Cabrera, who played through a variety of injuries and had two extra-base hits in September. Maybe as a result, Detroit scored one run or none in seven of 26 September games while going 13-13. … The A's have their own injury concern: OF Yoenis Cespedes received a cortisone shot for his ailing right shoulder in September but aggravated the injury over the weekend and may be limited to DH duties.
