ST. PETERSBURG — Top prospect Jeremy Hellickson is being called up to start Monday's game, though it may be a short stay.
Though manager Joe Maddon said he couldn't reveal the full "plot," he said no current starter will be dropped and they don't plan to switch to using six. That means Hellickson, 12-3, 2.45 at Triple A, would either go back to Durham or, less likely, the bullpen.
The point is to get extra rest for the current group in the middle of a 20-games-in-20-days stretch.
"It's our attempt at being prudent, monitoring their pitches and innings," Maddon said. "It's about having a very capable pitcher like Hellickson who we feel good about throwing out there in that moment."
