ST. PETERSBURG — There was a time earlier this season when LF Carl Crawford was on such a stolen-base tear, he was asked if he could reach the century mark.
Though Crawford won't complete that feat, largely due to opponents focusing on him more, he was just as happy to reach No. 59 Friday, tying his career high set in 2004.
He stole 25 in an injury-plagued 2008: "I'm just so happy to be healthy again and be able to run again. It just feels good."
Crawford, having arguably his best season, is finishing strong, including tying his season high with four hits Friday. In the past five games, he's hitting .500 with four multi-hit games.
WITH HONORS: OF Desmond Jennings and RHP Jeremy Hellickson didn't sleep much during their whirlwind trip to Tropicana Field.
The duo helped Triple-A Durham win the Governor's Cup on Thursday, took a 4 a.m. charter flight from Pennsylvania to Durham, N.C., and an 11 a.m. charter to Tampa so they could accept their minor-league player of the year and pitcher of the year awards Friday. They were tired but couldn't wait to get here.
The same could be said for getting to the majors. Both should draw plenty of attention in spring training. "Every time I see them down there in uniform, my adrenaline starts rushing," Jennings, 22, said. "I want to break camp with the team (next year). I'm going to do whatever I can to do that and make it hard on them not to do it."
Jennings hit .318 with 11 homers and 52 steals for Durham and Double-A Montgomery, saying being healthy for the first time in a few years was big.
Hellickson, 22, also made the most of his promotion to Durham, going 6-1 in nine starts.
"I'm ready," he said. "Whenever they want to give me a call."
STANDING PAT: Manager Joe Maddon said unless there's an injury, he doesn't believe the team will call up any more players from Durham. The Bulls play in the one-game Triple-A national championship in Oklahoma City on Tuesday.
CALL TO ARMS: The Rays are working on their rotation for next week, having to account for two off days. But it doesn't sound like they'll scale back the starts of RHP Matt Garza (185 innings) or RHP James Shields (2042/3 innings). "I think they're both pretty much right where they're supposed to be," Maddon said. Rookie RHP Wade Davis is scheduled to start Wednesday against Seattle.
MISCELLANY: Maddon said OF Fernando Perez, who injured his surgically repaired left wrist Thursday, was available to pinch run. … Senior adviser Don Zimmer visited the clubhouse for the first time since back surgery on Sept. 2.
