6A baseball: Alonso seals state berth

Orlando Sentinel

WINTER GARDEN — Alonso starter Jose Fernandez halted West Orange to help the Ravens, the defending Class 6A state champions, to a 6-1 victory Friday in a Class 6A region final.

Alonso (25-5), which plays Hialeah American May 21 in the state semifinals, got on the board first when Brandon Johnson scored on Tito Martinez's bases-loaded sacrifice fly.

The Warriors (20-10) answered with Greg Kalogridis' RBI single, which scored Aaron Spragg, but that was all West Orange got against Fernandez, who struck out 13 in seven innings.

Alonso put two runners on with no outs in the top of third, knocking Warriors starter TJ Sullivan out of the game. Anthony Seise came on in relief and struck out two batters before Chris Mejia's RBI single put the Ravens up 2-1.

Martinez scored on a fielder's choice in the fourth to stretch the lead to 3-1 and the Ravens tacked on another in the fifth.

Fernandez doubled home a run and Thomas Dorminy added an RBI-single in the sixth to make it 6-1 Alonso.

West Orange had runners on first and third and none out in the sixth, but Fernandez struck out the side to end the threat.
