2013-14 Tampa Spartans basketball preview

MEN

Coach: Richard Schmidt (590-288, 31st season at Tampa)

Last season: 17-14 (3-13 Sunshine State Conference)

Notable: The Spartans return two starters, Da'Markco Foster and Vincent Cornu, from last year's team that finished last in the SSC. Foster averaged a team-high 15.9 points and Cornu a team-high seven rebounds. In the offseason the Spartans added Jordan Davis, a Tampa native and Sickles graduate who led College of Central Florida with 7.3 assists per game.

Notable: Four players averaged double-digit points last season, and three return: Illyssa Vivo (11.7), Shamika Williams (10.4) and Juliana Cavallaro (10.2). The Spartans were picked to finish third in the SSC preseason poll. They have five newcomers, four of whom are transfers from Division I programs. In addition to leading the team in scoring last season, Vivo finished with a team-high 88 assists and averaged 6.3 rebounds.
