Fernandez talks to UNLV about post TAMPA — USF women's coach Jose Fernandez, who has led the Bulls to the postseason five years in a row, had a preliminary interview Monday for the coaching vacancy at UNLV. UNLV officials interviewed 17 candidates Monday, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal, with a small number of finalists expected to get on-campus interviews this week. Fernandez, 116-123 in eight seasons at USF, went 16-16 this season, losing in the first round of the WNIT. UNLV fired Regina Miller after an 8-22 season. Fernandez did not return calls seeking comment Tuesday. He just finished the third season of a five-year contract. Also at USF, sophomore Caitlyn Mitryk a 6-foot-1 guard-forward who averaged less than two points a game in two seasons, has been granted a release to transfer. Greg Auman, Times staff writer
