College basketball preview: Florida Gators vs. Tennessee Volunteers

Tonight: No. 17 Florida vs. Tennessee

When/where: 6; Stephen C. O'Connell Center, Gainesville

TV/radio: ESPN; 1250-AM

Records: Florida 19-5, 8-2 SEC; Tennessee 15-9, 5-4

Notable: Florida won 81-75 in Knoxville on Jan. 11. The Vols lost 73-61 at No. 18 Kentucky on Tuesday but have beaten No. 4 Pitt, No. 9 Villanova and No. 23 Vanderbilt. Florida is one win shy of 20 for the 13th consecutive season. This is the second game back for Vols coach Bruce Pearl, who was suspended eight games by the SEC for NCAA violations. "I think (commissioner Mike Slive) really punished me by allowing me to come back by going to Rupp Arena and the O-Dome," he said this week. "What a wonderful reward to be able to … go to those two places."

    1. Saturday's triumph will do little to fortify USF's strength of schedule, but its strength-of-character quotient might have increased. On the road facing an eclectic offense, the Bulls built a huge lead, then made critical plays in the waning moments after some defensive lapses. In short, they survived. Isn't …
