Saint Leo Lions college basketball season preview 2010-11

Saint Leo

Men

Coach: Mike Madagan (92-168, 10th season)

Last season: 11-20 (4-12 Sunshine State Conference)

Notable: Jordan Prais, Saint Leo's all-time leading scorer and rebounder, graduated along with impact player Josue Vazquez, which explains why the Lions were selected last (ninth) in the preseason SSC poll after finishing tied for seventh. A quartet of seniors — Brandon High's Jeremy Jackson, Wesley Chapel's Saladeem Dewberry, Matt Salay and Quentin Cullop, who returns to the team after a year hiatus — provide stability. The Lions, though, need scorers. None of their returning players averaged double figures last season.

Women

Coach: Chanita Olds (52-86, sixth season)

Last season: 13-15 (6-10 Sunshine State Conference)

Notable: The Lions dropped 13 of their final 17 to finish sixth in the SSC after starting a program-best 9-2. That skid combined with the graduation of All-SSC player Dominique Daniels is what prompted conference coaches to vote the Lions last (ninth) in the preseason poll. Just two starters, seniors Gekeela Clemmons and Brittany Carannante, return. Chanele Patton, who starred locally at Blake, figures to play plenty of minutes, as does Boca Ciega alumna Melissa Schmidt.

ST. PETERSBURG — Chaim Bloom said the Rays weren't necessarily in the market for a shortstop. The team has a number of those. But when the Marlins recently began shopping Adeiny Hechavarria, well, that was too much to pass up.

Adeiny Hechavarria has emerged as one of baseball’s top defensive shortstops in the past three seasons with the Marlins.
