TAMPA — In the wake of the greatest season in program history, USF women's basketball coach Jose Fernandez has been rewarded with a new contract.

The school announced Monday it has added three years — and raises — to Fernandez's contract, resulting in a six-year deal that will pay him roughly $2.9 million. His $425,000 salary for 2015-16 will increase annually, topping out at $550,000 the final year. His previous annual salary was $325,000. Under the new deal, he gets performance bonuses for achievements such as a 20-win season ($15,000), an NCAA Tournament berth ($15,000) and Final Four appearance ($75,000). His staff salary pool also increases by $100,000, to roughly $420,000 annually.

"It took a long time for (USF) to realize what they had, because they kind of strung him along," UConn coach Geno Auriemma said. "And what happened today with him, long overdue; long, long overdue."

USF (27-8) reached its second NCAA Tournament in three years this season and tied the program's single-season victories record.
