Temple upsets No. 19 USF women at buzzer

PHILADELPHIA — Erica Covile had 15 points and 10 rebounds, including the winning putback with one second left, and Temple upset No. 19 USF 68-66 Saturday to move past the Bulls into second place in the American Athletic Conference.

Feyonda Fitzgerald's step-back jumper behind the free-throw line rolled off the right side of the rim, but Covile was there for the winner for the Owls, who had 12 of their 19 offensive rebounds in the second half.

"They went to the glass, they rebounded and they made shots — bottom line," USF coach Jose Fernandez said.

Courtney Williams had 22 points and 10 rebounds for the Bulls (16-6, 9-3 AAC), who couldn't get off a last-second shot. Kitija Laksa added 15 points. The Bulls had won four straight.

Tanaya Atkinson had 17 points for Temple (15-7, 9-2), which won its fourth straight. Fitzgerald had 13 and Alliya Butts 12.

Laksa had 11 points in the third quarter when USF turned a one-point deficit into a 52-44 lead. The Owls opened the fourth quarter with a 13-2 run to lead 57-54. Williams tied it with a 3 at 5:53, and it stayed tight down the stretch.

TAMPA 77, ECKERD 63: Candace Martino had 20 points and Elena de Alfredo a career-high 18 for the host Spartans (13-9, 6-5 Sunshine State Conference), who won their sixth straight league game. Ashley Folsom scored 24 for the Tritons (11-9, 6-6).

LYNN 67, SAINT LEO 58: Chelsy Springs had 21 points for the host Lions (4-18, 1-12 SSC), who were outrebounded 46-24.

NO. 1 UCONN 92, ECU 46: Kia Nurse scored a season-high 20 for the host Huskies (22-0, 12-0 AAC), who head into Monday's showdown at No. 2 South Carolina on a 59-game winning streak, the third longest in team and NCAA history.

NO. 4 BAYLOR 81, KANSAS 49: Kalani Brown had 18 points, fellow freshman Beatrice Mompremier had 14 points and 12 rebounds and the host Bears (23-1, 10-1 Big 12) won their 10th straight conference game.

NO. 6 TEXAS 65, IOWA ST. 49: Ariel Atkins had a career-high 22 points with 11 rebounds for the Longhorns (21-1, 10-1 Big 12), who improved to 9-0 on the road.

NO. 20 OKLA. 77, TCU 64: Vionise Pierre-Louis had 11 of her 14 points in the fourth quarter, and the host Sooners (15-6, 6-4 Big 12) pulled away.
