2A girls basketball: Tampa Prep stays close then stumbles in stretch

LAKELAND — Latora Lofgren scored 24, with 17 coming in the first half, but it wasn't enough as Tampa Prep fell 54-41 to Lakeland Christian in a Class 2A region quarterfinal Thursday night.

Tampa Prep took an early 6-0 lead, but Lakeland Christian fought back to tie it at 21 going into halftime.

Christin Strawbridge's 10 points in the third quarter matched Tampa Prep's team total as the Vikings outscored the Terrapins opponent 19-10 to take a 40-31 lead.

Strawbridge had a game-high 30 points as her team fed her the ball in the post all night.

After Lofgren hit one of her two free throws to start the fourth quarter, Strawbridge put the game away with seven straight points.

Strawbridge scored 19 of Lakeland Christian's 33 second-half points.

Lakeland Christian will host Indian Rocks Christian on Tuesday.

  1. Marc Topkin's takeaways from Monday's Rays-Orioles game

    The Heater

LHP Blake Snell stepped up when the Rays needed him to — and perhaps when he had to to keep his job — with a season-high seven-plus innings. It wasn't only that he got deep into the game but how, using his high-octane fastball to pound the strike zone.

  2. Urban Meyer says the Big Ten is now the equal of the SEC

CHICAGO — Ohio State coach Urban Meyer doesn't just believe the Big Ten has closed the gap with the more heralded SEC. He is convinced the race is a dead heat already.

Ohio State’s Urban Meyer says the Big Ten East is as strong as the SEC East was when he coached UF to two national titles.
  3. USF opens preseason workouts with defensive improvement a priority

TAMPA — To prevent preseason wear on his three normal practice fields, new USF coach Charlie Strong is staging the first phase of the 2017 preseason on the fields used by the original Bulls two decades ago.

  4. Spieth has suddenly made the PGA Championship a lot more interesting

SOUTHPORT, England — Now that the PGA Championship in Charlotte next month has gone from a big deal to a big-big deal because of Jordan Spieth, there is no telling where he might lead us. On Sunday, of course, he led us way up a dune.

  5. In Twitter rant, Bucs' Gerald McCoy says he's unappreciated

Gerald McCoy is feeling underappreciated again. He says somebody has crossed the line this time. He's speaking out and suggesting he might be gone "soon enough" from Tampa Bay.

Gerald McCoy may be upset that Ronde Barber said a defensive leader “has to have a huge personality’’ like Warren Sapp’s. Monday, Barber walked that back.
