5A girls basketball: Hillsborough comes on strong late, tops Venice

VENICE — Hillsborough used a big fourth quarter top Venice 60-47 in the Class 5A region quarterfinals Thursday.

The Terriers outscored Venice 23-8 in the fourth quarter and held it to just one basket over the final four minutes.

The Terriers (19-8) trailed 39-37 after three quarters but scored the first six points of the fourth quarter to grab a 43-39 lead. Hillsborough maintained the four-point cushion midway through the fourth quarter.

Trailing 49-45 with 4:15 left, Venice (13-10) then was unable to score as Hillsborough rattled off nine consecutive points to take command.

The speedy Terriers snapped a 13-all tie early in the second quarter with an eight-point run keyed by consecutive 3-pointers from Cassandra Nevarez.

Hillsborough outrebounded Venice 44-29.

    A coalition of advocacy groups 'take a knee' outside of a hotel where members the quarterly NFL league meetings are being held on Tuesday in New York City.  Owners, players and commissioner Roger Goodell are all expected to attend. The activists spoke of having solidarity with athletes and coaches around the country who have also kneeled in protest of racial injustice, especially in policing.
