6A-7 girls basketball: St. Petersburg too tough for Sickles

CLEARWATER — Trailing by three points in the first half, St. Petersburg was in danger of losing to Sickles for the first time this season and needed a spark.

Jazmyne Green provided it.

Green, a senior, established herself as the bubbling, bouncing catalyst who was able to sway the Green Devils from dormant to dazzling in a 63-51 victory.

It is the first time St. Petersburg has won a district title.

"Jazmyne definitely stepped up tonight," Green Devils coach Tracolya Green said. "I keep telling her she has the ability to take over games."

Green started the second half in a flurry, scoring eight points within a span of 59 seconds in the third quarter. She didn't stop there, finishing the quarter with 14 of her team's 21 points.

That gave the Green Devils (21-5) a comfortable 45-36 lead heading into the fourth quarter.

St. Petersburg continued to push the pace and went up by as many as 16.

"Early on we were taking a lot of jump shots," Tracolya Green said. "In the second half, we started taking the ball toward the basket and that helped."

The Gryphons made a game of it with a late run and cut the deficit to 60-51 in the final two minutes.

But Sickles (20-6) could not get any closer as the Green Devils hit crucial free throws down the stretch.

"Offensively, we got out of a flow, especially in the third quarter," Gryphons coach Mark Key said. "We started shooting better in the fourth and got back into it, but our inexperience showed."

Green scored a team-high 22 points for St. Petersburg. Sickles was led by Amber Henson, who also had 22.
