Class A region basketball: Free throws lift Seffner Christian

Class A Seffner Christian prevails at the line

LAKELAND — Victory Christian appeared to have everything in its favor entering Thursday's game against Seffner Christian.

The Storm (17-2) was not only the No. 1 seed in its region bracket but had home-court advantage. Seffner Christian pulled off the 48-36 upset despite being down 20-18 at halftime.

A major reason was due to its dominant play inside, led by post player Courtney Welch's 22 points. Arielle Sadlowski added 13 points, and Alexandra Hagel had eight, all on key free throws in the fourth quarter. Seffner (15-10) made 16 of 21 free throws, while Victory only made eight of 12.

Victory was led in scoring by Shannon Fene with 13 points.

"The difference in the game was that Seffner made their free throws and we missed ours," Victory coach Grady Morrell said.

"…Our jump shots stopped falling and Seffner played physically and very fundamentally to earn the win."

TAMPA — Ever wonder what in the world goes through Jameis Winston's mind when he tries to fit the ball in a keyhole as he is being dragged to the turf like he was during Thursday night's 12-8 preseason win over the Jaguars?

GAINESVILLE — With two weeks before Florida opens its season against Michigan, the Gators' three-way quarterback battle remains wide open.

Luke Del Rio, right, is in the mix to start against Michigan in the season opener … as is Malik Zaire and Feleipe Franks.
