Tampa Hoops Classic: Orlando Olympia wins title in 2OT; Berkeley Prep's Gray hits milestone

TAMPA — When he received the inbounds pass, Orlando Olympia guard Martell Buie had two options: Dish the ball to star shooting guard Dexter Fields or head to the basket.

With Fields covered, Buie "went to the hole strong" and delivered the biggest shot of the Tampa Hoops Classic, a driving layup with 1.3 seconds left in double overtime that gave the Titans a dramatic 73-71 win Tuesday over Chicago North Lawndale in the championship game.

"In his career he's made a lot of big shots for us," Olympia coach Mark Griseck said.

After Buie's score, a lengthy North Lawndale pass was picked by Olympia to preserve the win. Buie finished with 18 points, second on the team to Fields, who had 20 and was the tournament MVP. Behind their effort, Olympia (10-2) defended its 2007 classic title and improved to 8-0 all-time in the event.

North Lawndale (8-2) was led by forward Jonathan Mills, who produced 21 points and 26 rebounds, the latter of which was 17 more than any other player. North Lawndale trailed by seven with 2:57 left in regulation before rallying to send the game to overtime on a buzzer-beating layup by Zilijan Jones. In the first overtime, North Lawndale missed two shots in the final three seconds that would have won it.

"They're tough," Griseck said. "They played hard."

In other games:

• Cincinnati Princeton defeated Gainesville, the top-ranked team in Class 5A, 38-35 for third place. Orlando Williams led the Vikings with 15 points. Marquis Horne added 11 points and seven rebounds. Anthony Nwadigo had 12 points and eight rebounds for the Purple Hurricanes.

• Austin Keel's buzzer beater near the basket off a length-of-the-court pass gave Winter Springs a thrilling — and shocking — 63-61 win over Clearwater in the fifth-place game.

• Berkeley Prep fell to Palm Beach Gardens Dwyer 71-62, but in a losing effort Buccaneers guard Johnathan Gray scored 24 points to go over 1,000 for his prep career.

• King defeated Leonardtown (Md.) St. Mary's Ryken 66-47 for its second straight tourney win. One of the Lions' defeats was in overtime to North Lawndale in the opening round.
