NEW ORLEANS — With a 9-yard touchdown pass late against the Falcons, the Saints' Drew Brees on Monday night broke Dan Marino's 27-year-old record for passing yards in a season.
The scoring pass, to Darren Sproles with 2:56 left in the game, gave Brees 5,087 yards, 3 more than Marino's 1984 mark of 5,084.
Entering the game, Brees needed 305 yards for the record. The TD pass gave him 307 in the game on 23 of 39 passing. It was his fourth scoring pass of the game. He also had two interceptions.
Breaking Marino's record had appeared inevitable, but Brees declined an interview with Marino, a CBS analyst, last week.
"I've tried to numb my senses (to the record) and focus on us winning football games, executing the offense, being prepared," Brees said before the game. "The rest will take care of itself."
