CINCINNATI — LF Ryan Braun's admission that he used performance-enhancing drugs was welcomed by the Brewers.
"It was a good first step on the road to redemption," C Jonathan Lucroy said Friday of his teammate.
Braun released a statement Thursday admitting he used PEDs while recovering from an injury in 2011. Lucroy said he expects a news conference at some point. For now, the statement sufficed.
"It certainly was enough for me," manager Ron Roenicke said. "No matter what he says, there's going to be some negative from a lot of people: 'He didn't say enough. He didn't explain himself enough.' I also think there are some things he probably still can't say."
Crawford-Sox reunion: Dodgers LF Carl Crawford faced the Red Sox for the first time since last year's trade. Crawford, who left the Rays for Boston for a seven-year, $142 million deal in 2010, called his time with the Sox "a bad experience. … I want to win all three games. Bad."
Braves: RHP Brandon Beachy, who returned from Tommy John surgery in July, went on the DL with right elbow inflammation. Manager Fredi Gonzalez said he isn't overly concerned.
Cardinals: RHP Jake Westbrook went on the DL with a lower-back strain.
Giants: RHP Matt Cain went on the DL with a bruised right forearm. He was hit by the line drive Thursday.
Mariners: Manager Eric Wedge, who had a mild stroke July 22, returned and said doctors placed no restrictions on his activities.
Tigers: With no DH for the game at the Mets, Victor Martinez started at catcher for the first time since Aug. 4, 2011. He came up as a catcher with the Indians in 2002.
Twins: C Joe Mauer, out with a concussion since Monday, received permission to begin a light exercise program.
A's-Nationals trade: The A's got C Kurt Suzuki for Class A RHP Dakota Bacus. Oakland sent Suzuki to Washington last season but now is missing John Jaso (concussion) and Derek Norris (broken left big toe).
