Captain's Corner: Finding grouper on Florida's west coast, looking to lobster

Where's the grouper? This has been the most prevalent question posed to me in the past few weeks. Concentrations of gag and red grouper have been on ledges and hard bottom areas in 75-85 feet west of the Sunshine Skyway bridge and 60-70 feet west of Tarpon Springs. They are slowly moving to deeper water. This weekend, check out structure that is a little deeper. Typically, this time of year bigger grouper move into the deeper cracks of the elbow and areas just south of the Middle Grounds; this year they have yet to arrive.

Lobster season: The Florida spiny lobster sportsman's miniseason is almost upon us. The two-day season starts July 29. See myfwc.com for rules and regulations for your area.

Tournament: The 44th St. Pete Open is Aug. 14-16 at the Holiday Inn Sunspree in St. Petersburg. There is time to register early and get the discounted rate. Go tostpeteopen.com to find out more.
