Duke has been tabbed basketball’s preseason No. 1 for the second straight season in the coaches’ poll, released Thursday.
Florida, which made it to the Elite Eight last season, is No. 7 and one of only four teams to receive a first-place vote, along with Duke, Michigan State and Arizona.
The Gators’ chief SEC rival, Kentucky, is ranked fourth.
It’s the highest ranking for Florida under coach Mike White, who is heading into his third season in Gainesville. UF has been ranked higher only two other times in the preseason poll: first in 2006-07 and fifth in 2001-02.
KIFFIN LAWSUIT DISMISSED: A judge has dismissed a fraud suit filed against Florida Atlantic football coach Lane Kiffin. Shelby County (Ala.) Circuit Judge Lara Alvis dismissed the case with prejudice, meaning it can’t be refiled. Former Alabama receiver Antonio "A.C." Carter had said that Kiffin and FAU offered him a job to get him to help sign a prospect, then failed to follow through on assurances that the job was his. The suit said Kiffin and other coaches knew Carter and his family had a relationship with the prospect. It said Carter later was told that two "minor misdemeanor" charges disqualified him.
Michigan State: LJ Scott, the team’s leading rusher, was released on a personal recognizance bond after being charged with driving on a suspended license, or a similar charge, for a seventh time.
