Lane Kiffin alert
Don’t look now, but Lane Kiffin’s Florida Atlantic Owls are off to the program’s best ever start since joining Division I-A. Here’s how his first seven games at FAU compare to his first seven at Tennessee:
Record: 4-3 (3-0 Conference USA)
Points scored: 274
Points allowed: 186
Best win: Hanging 69 points and 804 yards of offense on a solid North Texas team last week
Worst loss: No shame in losing to Navy or Wisconsin, but a 34-31 loss at Buffalo isn’t great
Record: 3-4 (1-3 SEC)
Points scored: 202
Point allowed: 129
Best win: 45-19 over an eight-win Georgia team
Worst loss: Couldn’t sing Rocky Top all night long after a 10-point loss at UF
Miami QB Malik Rosier has picked up the slack after standout RB Mark Walton went down with a season-ending ankle injury. Rosier has completed at least 60 percent of his passes in those two games, throwing three touchdowns and no interceptions. He’s the first ’Canes quarterback to win his first seven starts since Brock Berlin (2003) and could improve to 8-0 at lowly North Carolina.
Remember Jeff Tedford, the one-time Bucs offensive coordinator whose heart problems kept him from ever calling a play for the team? He’s rolling at Fresno State (5-2). His Bulldogs have won four in a row (including last week’s 24-point win over San Diego State) and are legitimate Mountain West contenders heading into tonight’s game against UNLV.
"He’s throwing simple passes — I get it. Anybody can throw a slant — I get it." — Gators DB Chauncey Gardner, providing bulletin-board material about Georgia QB Jake Fromm. Fromm, by the way, has the top passer rating in the SEC (170.42).
