South Florida Bulls quarterback Matt Grothe seeks Big East total offense record

You might know that quarterback Matt Grothe needs 288 yards of offense to break the Big East career record. He held it briefly last season before West Virginia quarterback Pat White finished with 10,529. Grothe, who has 10,242 yards, could get what he needs during Saturday's opener against Wofford and, in the process, surpass Marquel Blackwell's school record of 10,343. What's interesting is the Big East has played football only since 1991, and half of the league's eight current teams joined in the past five years. So many have total offense records predating their membership. It's well within Grothe's range to finish this season with more total yards than any player at any of the Big East's current schools. The 10,000-yard club members among the programs:

Two programs have no 10,000-yard players. Rutgers' all-time leader is Mike Teel, who left after last season with 9,173 yards. Syracuse's school record is 9,950 by Donovan McNabb (1995-98).

Dancing with the star

The secret to defensive end George Selvie's continued progress as a feared pass rusher: playing the Nintendo Wii game Dance Dance Revolution to work on his footwork.

"During the summer, we lift in the mornings, so I got bored during the day," Selvie said. "I got me a little Wii, a little Dance Dance Revolution."

Selvie said he made a "Mii" character to look like Michael Jackson, and Jackson's song Black or White is Selvie's favorite to dance to.

Laugh all you want, but Selvie believes the footwork could make a difference: "You've got some steps you have to do that are pretty hard, pretty fast."

Players become coaches

The coaching staff has a strong presence of former USF players, most notably co-offensive line coach Larry Scott, a tackle from 1997-99. Four other ex-Bulls are on the staff: Safety J.R. Reed and offensive lineman Mike Lube are graduate assistants, and quarterback Marquel Blackwell and nose tackle Ron Johnson are program assistants.
