CFP boss Bill Hancock on playoff format: 'Why monkey with a good thing?'

HOOVER, Ala. — If you're waiting for the College Football Playoff to expand to more than four teams, keep on waiting.

Bill Hancock, executive director of the CFP, said Wednesday that "there is no talk about the expansion of the field."

While addressing journalists at the SEC media days, Hancock said keeping the field at four teams keeps the emphasis on college football's regular season.

"Why monkey with a good thing?" Hancock said.

This will be the fourth year of the four-team playoff format, and Hancock reminded everyone there is a 12-year contract in place for a four-team playoff. Because the playoff has been successful, there has been talk that it's only a matter of time before the playoff expands to eight or possibly 16 teams.

But, for now, the playoff will stay at four.

For openers

The biggest game being talked about at media days technically isn't an SEC game. It's the season opener between Alabama and the ACC's Florida State on Sept. 2 at Atlanta's new Mercedes-Benz Stadium. It could be a No. 1 vs. No. 2 matchup.

"(FSU is) probably one of the best teams and one of the best legacies in college football," Alabama junior DB Minkah Fitzpatrick said.

"We don't get to see them a lot, so when we play each other, it's going to be a great game. I think it will be a lot of fun to play."

Aggie angst

Texas A&M coach Kevin Sumlin is feeling a little heat after coming off three consecutive 8-5 seasons.

Back in May, A&M athletic director Scott Woodward told the SEC Network's Paul Finebaum, "Coach knows he has to win and win this year, and we have to do better than we've done in the past."

Sumlin was asked Wednesday if he has had subsequent conversations with Woodward.

"I'm not going to get into what those conversations are about," Sumlin said. "My job? Nothing changes for me. … Nobody puts more pressure on me than I put on myself.

"Whatever is said or written is not going to affect my job."

Quick slants

Tom Hart will take over for the retired Brent Musburger as the play-by-play announcer on the SEC Network's top broadcasting team. Analyst will be former Bachelorette star Jordan Rodgers (left), brother of Packers QB Aaron Rodgers. Cole Cubelic will work the sidelines. … Kentucky coach Mark Stoops, talking about the Wildcats' 30-game losing streak against Florida: "We don't hide from that, but it's not something I talk about. I haven't been here 30 years." Stoops is 0-4 versus the Gators. … Interesting tidbit: Later this summer, Texas A&M offensive lineman Koda Martin will marry Texas A&M volleyball player Jazzmin Babers, who is the daughter of Syracuse football coach Dino Babers.
