College football preview: Florida vs. Georgia Southern, 2 Saturday, 620-AM

Florida vs. Georgia Southern, 2, 620-AM

The Gators (4-6) are on a five-game losing streak, and of their final two games, this is their best opportunity to end the skid. But that's not to imply that a victory is assured. The Eagles (6-4) average 34.2 points a game and 453.7 yards of offense, and they have won three of their past four games. One of the questions surrounding this game: How many fans will show up at the Swamp? "We're at the point where we're in desperate need of a win to kind of bring the team spirit back up," OL Trenton Brown said.

Watch out for … Georgia Southern's triple-option offense is so complex that Florida coach Will Muschamp and his staff did extensive video study of it in the offseason and have talked all week about the need to play assignment-sound defense. The Gators most likely will start QB Skyler Mornhinweg for the second consecutive week as Tyler Murphy continues to recover from his shoulder injuries.

It is going to get interesting tonight when the Rays begin a four-game series against the Yankees in New York. The Rays feel they are good enough to win the East Division. These next four games and the four that follow in Houston will be a good measuring stick.

  4. Jones: Alex Cobb proves again why he's Rays' stopper, no matter how long he's here

If a team hopes to hang around the pennant race, they better have an ace. A stopper. A pitcher they can count on every fifth day to stop the bleeding, keep a winning streak going or flat-out win a game that a team flat-out needs to win.

  5. Twice the talent: IMG football expands to two teams this fall

    Footballpreps

BRADENTON — When IMG Academy fielded its first varsity football team in 2013, there were 51 players on the roster. Since then, the roster has nearly tripled. With no junior varsity it was difficult for some to find playing time, and players do not come to IMG to sit the bench.
