College football preview: No. 7 Miami at No. 3 Florida State, 8 p.m. Saturday, Ch. 28, 820-AM

No. 7 Miami at No. 3 Florida State, 8, Ch. 28, 820-AM

Both teams have championship aspirations. The Seminoles (7-0, 5-0 ACC) have been dominant in 2013 and are No. 3 in the BCS rankings. The "Cardiac Canes" (7-0, 3-0) needed some late-game heroics to get past North Carolina and Wake Forest, but they remain one of eight undefeated teams in major college football and have their highest ranking since 2005. Oh, and there's a little pride on the line between the intrastate rivals, with friends on both sides and recruits watching closely.

Watch out for … The Hurricanes have to establish the run to have a chance against the No. 4 scoring defense in Division I-A. Boston College ran for 200 yards on 45 carries against Florida State. The Eagles have been the only team to establish the run against the Seminoles and the only team to stay within 14 points. RB Duke Johnson is the focal point of the Miami offense with 117.6 yards rushing per game and six touchdowns. The FSU run defense ranks No. 29 in the nation, allowing 135.7 yards per game. Miami would love to control the clock and keep the Seminoles' offense on the sideline.

Other state games

No. 7 Miami vs. Wake Forest, noon, ESPNU, 1040-AM: For the first time since coach Al Golden was hired late in 2010, Miami gets to play without the NCAA investigation hanging over its head. It's now resolved and the Hurricanes (6-0, 2-0 ACC) get to focus on football. Wake Forest (4-3, 2-2) is looking for its third straight win as the Demon Deacons rebound from a tough start to ACC play. The Hurricanes are 2-3 since 2007 in the week before the Florida State rivalry game.

No. 21 UCF vs. UConn, noon, 1350-AM: The Knights (5-1, 2-0 American) are trying to keep their momentum going a week after knocking off conference favorite Louisville on the road. UCF has its best start since 1998 and is in the Top 25 for the first time since 2010. A victory would also make the Knights bowl eligible for the fourth time in five seasons. For UConn (0-6, 0-2), interim coach T.J. Weist seeks his first win since taking over four games into the season.

FAMU vs. N.C. A&T, 2 p.m.: Both teams are struggling. The Rattlers are 2-5 overall and 1-2 in the MEAC. For North Carolina A&T (3-3, 1-3), Tank Cohen leads with 400 yards rushing but only one touchdown.

Bethune-Cookman vs. S.C. State, 4 p.m.: The Wildcats (6-1, 3-0 MEAC) have a highly anticipated game against South Carolina State (5-2, 3-0), which has won five in a row after losses at unbeaten Coastal Carolina and to Division I-A Clemson. The winner of this matchup has won five of the past six MEAC titles.

FIU vs. Louisiana Tech, 6 p.m.: Skip Holtz's new team visits the Panthers (1-5, 1-1) for the first time. For the Bulldogs (2-5, 1-2), senior DE IK Enemkpali leads Conference USA and places 10th nationally with 5½ sacks. He is third all-time in sacks at Louisiana Tech with 17½ , placing him 13th among active I-A players.

FAU at No. 11 Auburn, 7:30, Fox Sports Florida: The Tigers (6-1) are riding a wave of momentum from a win over Texas A&M. Now, they are trying to avoid a lackluster followup against the Owls (2-5).
