College gameday

College football previews: FAMU, Bethune-Cookman, Miami

Florida A&M at Howard, 1

Both teams are 2-0 in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, so the winner will be in good position to chase the league title. QB Damien Fleming leads the Rattlers (2-3) with 1,091 passing yards and 10 touchdowns, generally connecting with WR Travis Harvey, who has 36 catches for 462 yards and seven TDs. Howard is 3-1 overall.

Bethune-Cookman vs. N.C. A&T, 4

North Carolina A&T (2-2, 0-1) leads the MEAC in total defense (allowing an average 255 yards per game), but it will be tested by B-CU (3-2, 2-0), which leads in total offense (371.2).

Miami vs. No. 9 Notre Dame at Chicago, 7:30, Ch. 8, 1040-AM

The Fighting Irish are trying to improve to 5-0 for the first time since 2002. Miami (4-1) also is looking to move back among the elite and also is looking for its biggest victory since a 21-20 win over No. 8 Oklahoma three years ago. Miami QB Stephen Morris, who threw for a school- and ACC-record 566 yards last week against N.C. State, leads Division I-A's 15th-ranked passing offense. Notre Dame is rated ninth in I-A in pass-efficiency defense and 15th in total defense. Notre Dame is 9-0-2 all time at Soldier Field, including 3-0 during the 1929 national championship season, when Notre Dame Stadium was being built.

  2. For starters: Rays at Yankees, in a pretty big series

The Rays open a challenging road trip tonight in New York, the first of four games against the wild-card leading Yankees.

Chris Archer will be on the mound for the Rays.
  3. Bucs' O.J. Howard says in NFL, 'it's an SEC game every day'

Bucs rookie O.J. Howard hasn't played in an NFL game yet, but he already appreciates the grind of an NFL season -- every week can be a loss, perhaps more so than in college football, where Alabama went 12-0 in nonconference, non-bowl games in his three years there.

Bucs rookie O.J. Howard, shown playing for Alabama in the national championship game in Tampa in January, says every game in the NFL is an SEC game, with no letdowns.
  4. Bucs' Mike Evans wants his 'A' game in 4th NFL season

Bucs receiver Mike Evans has been in the NFL for three seasons, and in two of them, he's had 12 touchdown catches, setting and then matching his own team record. He made the Pro Bowl for the first time last season, but if you ask him to grade those three years, he doesn't see an "A" product just yet.

Bucs receiver Mike Evans, shown during an OTA workout last month, said he wouldn't give himself an "A" for any of his first three NFL seasons, despite going to the Pro Bowl and twice catching 12 touchdown passes in a season.
