Florida Gators' QB situation remains up in the air

GAINESVILLE — With 10 days remaining until Florida's season opener against Michigan, Gators coach Jim McElwain still hasn't named a starting quarterback.

Does it bother him?

"Not at all," he said Wednesday.

McElwain made it clear to reporters that the top three contenders — Feleipe Franks, Luke Del Rio and Malik Zaire — will continue to battle for the position in practice.

"I think there's some things that they all bring to the table that are really good," McElwain said.

"Will all play? I don't know yet. Will a couple of them play? I don't know yet."

Asked whether he needs to narrow the group to two, McElwain acknowledged that it's difficult to get enough reps for three guys in practice. At the same time, he assured that his staff's indecision isn't a cause for worry.

"Don't read into this (like) we're not happy where they're at. … The competition has really brought out some good things."

But while McElwain failed to specify a starter, he did emphasize a few characteristics his staff is looking for at this point:

"Ultimately, the guy that the team moves with the best," McElwain said. "The guys that create positive plays on third down and get the ball in the end zone. That's kind of where we're at."

McElwain could be playing coy with his quarterback announcement in response to Michigan coach Jim Harbaugh's reluctance to update his roster, something most programs have already accomplished.

"We haven't gone into Michigan true (preparation) at all," McElwain said. "When you guys get their roster, let me know so maybe I can figure out who we're playing."

Harbaugh tweeted Sunday that the Wolverines will release their official roster Aug. 30, three days before their Sept. 2 season opener against Florida at in Arlington, Texas.

OHIO STATE: Backup quarterback Joe Burrow will be sidelined indefinitely after breaking his throwing hand in practice. The redshirt sophomore had surgery after breaking a bone in his right hand Monday. Burrow backed up J.T. Barrett last season and was competing for the job with Dwayne Haskins in preseason camp. The winner was expected to have an advantage in the quarterback derby next year to replace Barrett.

USC: Former kicker Matt Boermeester has filed a petition in Los Angeles Superior Court in an effort to overturn his expulsion after a school investigation of allegations that he abused his girlfriend.
