Former Gulf standout Alton Voss confident after NFL tryout

Alton Voss, scoring during his days playing for Gulf High, is trying to catch on as a free agent defensive end in the NFL or get an opportunity in the Canadian Football League at age 28.

If times and tape measures are any sign, former Gulf High standout Alton Voss likely enriched his chances at landing a free agent deal during his de facto NFL tryout Monday in Michigan.

The former USF signee, who conquered drug addiction to land a second chance at Division II Grand Valley (Mich.) State, Voss was among a handful of former GVSU players working out for approximately five NFL teams — and at least one Canadian club — at the Lakers' pro day.

A defensive end, Voss did 20 reps in the 225-pound bench press and recorded a 9-foot, 5-inch broad jump and 341/2-inch vertical leap, according to his Michigan-based agent, Todd Williams. His unofficial 40-yard dash times hovered between 4.68 and 4.75 seconds, Williams said.

"I feel like my testing went really well," Voss said. "And then position work, I left it all out there. There were some things that might have been a little rusty, but I believe I left everything on the field and displayed my speed, my explosiveness and strength."

Voss' numbers were far shy of those posted at the recent NFL combine by top-ranked defensive end Myles Garrett of Texas A&M, but they're comparable to others believed to be high on most draft boards.

Michigan's Taco Charlton, the draft's fourth-ranked end by cbssports.com, ran the 40 in 4.92 seconds at the combine, logging 25 reps on the bench with a 33-inch vertical and 9-7 broad jump.

Voss, 28, has said his realistic goal is to land a free agent deal immediately after next month's NFL draft, or get a CFL opportunity.

"I feel like I helped myself today," he said.
