FSU player wants to send young cancer patient to BCS title game

More than a decade ago, a devastating family medical situation rocked the world of Florida State sophomore offensive lineman Mike Scheerhorn.

The former Tampa Catholic player's brother Daniel was diagnosed with a brain tumor. The Children's Cancer Center in Tampa was invaluable in supporting the family through Daniel's operation, chemotherapy and rehabilitation, Mike says, and he wants to show his gratitude now by sending a patient and her parent to see FSU play Auburn in the BCS title game Jan. 6 in Pasadena, Calif.

Mike is giving two tickets from his personal allocation. To raise money for hotel and travel expenses, he went to the online fund-raising site Crowdrise. He wanted $5,000. By Thursday night, almost $10,700 had been pledged.

The leftover money will be given to the Children's Cancer Center.
