FSU's Fisher won't discuss Texas coaching rumors

TALLAHASSEE — Florida State coach Jimbo Fisher is widely considered a strong candidate for the vacant coaching position at Texas.

But whether it's Texas or elsewhere, Fisher said he doesn't plan on addressing any coaching rumors as his team prepares for the BCS title game against Auburn on Jan. 6.

"I'm going to talk about our team, that's all I'm going to talk about. I ain't getting into all the rumors," Fisher said Wednesday. "It's unfair to those teams and our team. We're planning here, getting ready for a game. That's my sole focus, and that is it."

Fisher has agreed to a contract extension, according to FSU athletic director Stan Wilcox. The deal, reportedly for $4.1 million per year, was being finalized as of Dec. 7.

Auburn coach Gus Malzahn, also mentioned as a potential target for Texas, said he was "tickled to death" to be at Auburn. And reported that Jon Gruden, who hasn't coached since the Bucs fired him after the 2008 season, is open to hearing from Texas.

Meanwhile, FSU held its first practice since beating Duke in the ACC Championship Game on Dec. 7.

Fisher said he wants to ease back into a routine and treat the next five practices before a holiday break like preseason camp, focusing on fundamentals.

Junior college OL signs with Gators

GAINESVILLE — Addressing a desperate need, Florida signed junior college offensive lineman Drew Sarvary to a national letter of intent. He will enroll in January with two years of eligibility remaining.

Sarvary, 6 feet 5 and 318 pounds, played in 11 games as a freshman at Florida A&M, starting the final 10. He spent last season at Tyler (Texas) Junior College and made the All-Southwest Junior College Football Conference first team.

A school spokesman said there were factors other than Comegy's record and discipline and recruiting locally will be requirements for the next coach. … Southeast Missouri State hired Toledo defensive coordinator Tom Matukewicz, 40, as coach. Tony Samuel was fired last month.

  1. Rays journal: Offense shows signs of waking up in win over Blue Jays (w/video)

    The Heater

ST. PETERSBURG — The drought was so severe that it's still probably too soon to say that the Rays are out of it, but they did score six runs Tuesday in a 6-5 win over the Blue Jays.

Corey Dickerson high-fives Wilson Ramos after hitting a solo home run in the third inning, putting the Rays up 2-1.
  2. Marc Topkin's takeaways from Tuesday's Rays-Blue Jays game

    The Heater

C Wilson Ramos, coming off major right knee surgery, understandably often takes it easy running the bases, though it's not always a good look. But he hustled when he needed to Tuesday and got the Rays a run by beating out a two-out infield single.

  3. Rays are full of ideas they'd like to share when commissioner visits

ST. PETERSBURG — Commissioner Rob Manfred is coming to the Trop today. Hmm. Rays principal owner Stuart Sternberg will be there to greet him. Hmmmm. And they have a scheduled joint media session. Hmmmmmmmmm.

Commissioner Rob Manfred isn’t expected to say anything definitive about the Rays’ stadium situation when he visits the team today.

  5. 'Hard Knocks' star Riley Bullough still not a lock for Bucs

TAMPA — Bucs undrafted rookie LB Riley Bullough is perhaps the surprise star of HBO's Hard Knocks and has been productive in two preseason games, but Bucs coach Dirk Koetter said Tuesday that he's caught in a numbers game competing for a backup spot on the Tampa Bay roster.

Riley Bullough has made a good impression on Hard Knocks and on coach Dirk Koetter, but he isn’t guaranteed a job.
