Rutgers coach Greg Schiano is not happy about playing in the St. Petersburg Bowl because it interferes directly with Rutgers' final exams. He and athletic director Tim Pernetti made calls Sunday trying to land a bowl berth later in the month.

"Quite frankly it's very disappointing," Schiano told Bigeastsportsblog.com. "I cherish that time with the underclassmen to really bring them along. This date doesn't work so well for that. … If we won more games, then it wouldn't be that situation where you have to worry. I'm not ashamed of who we are. We're growing and we're going to become great. But right now we're not great. We've got to deal with it and we will."

Having Rutgers along with a local team in UCF should make for strong attendance. Brett Dulaney, the bowl's executive director, pointed out that Rutgers has an alumni base of 15,000 in the state of Florida.

USC UNRANKED: Southern California dropped out of the AP poll following eight years and 130 consecutive polls after completing its worst regular season since 2001 at 8-4. Southern Cal's streak was the second-longest active one in the country behind Texas' 156 weeks. Ohio State is now second with 83 straight AP rankings.

weis apologizes to carroll: Recently fired Notre Dame coach Charlie Weis apologized to Southern California coach Pete Carroll after an interview transcript posted on IrishIllustrated.com quoted Weis suggesting Carroll doesn't live with his wife: "Was I living with a grad student in Malibu, or was I living with my wife in my house? You could bet that if I were living with a grad student here in South Bend, it would be national news. He's doing it in Malibu and it's not national news. … Why is it okay for one guy to do things like that, but for me, I'm scrutinized when I swear.'' Carroll called the comments "untrue" and "irresponsible." Weis said he was making general statements about false Internet coaching rumors.

oklahoma: Defensive tackle Adrian Taylor, an honorable mention All-Big 12 selection, will return for a fifth season.

Tennessee: With assistant Frank Wilson leaving for LSU, coach Lane Kiffin will be in charge of receivers for the Chick-fil-A Bowl.

virginia: The Cavaliers sought permission to speak with Richmond coach Mike London about their coaching vacancy. The Spiders, who won the Division II national championship last season in London's first year, lost to Appalachian State on Saturday night in the quarterfinals.
