USF Bulls' Chris Dunkley charged with domestic violence, suspended from team

TAMPA — USF sophomore WR Chris Dunkley was suspended indefinitely by coach Skip Holtz on Sunday, following his arrest Saturday night two hours after the Bulls' loss to No. 4 Florida State on a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence battery.

"Our players have an obligation to conduct themselves in an appropriate manner on and off the field," Holtz said in a statement. "Due to the serious nature of this matter, we have suspended Chris indefinitely from all team activities."

Dunkley, 21, was arrested by Hillsborough County Sheriff's officers on campus at 11:23 p.m. Saturday and booked at 1:44 a.m. Sunday; as of 9:30 p.m. Sunday, he remained in jail, held without bail.

According to the arrest report, the charges relate to an alleged argument eight days earlier, when Dunkley did not travel with USF to its game at Ball State due to a knee injury. Dunkley was involved in a "verbal dispute" at noon on Sept. 21 with his girlfriend of three years in the off-campus apartment they live in when the argument escalated, according to the report.

The report states that Dunkley "forced the victim to the floor and began to punch and strike the victim in the arms and legs causing bruising." Dunkley then "grabbed the victim's hair and forced her into a closet where he began to strike the victim with a computer cord on the back of the thighs, causing several lacerations," according to the report, which concludes by stating that there is "a strong likelyhood (sic) of repeat violence."

The victim contacted HCSO officers at 5:15 p.m. Saturday, less than an hour before the USF-FSU game started.

After completing interviews and taking digital photos for evidence, officers arrested Dunkley when he returned to campus from Raymond James Stadium.

There are no records of any previous arrests for Dunkley, who graduated from Pahokee High and transferred to USF from Florida, sitting out the 2011 season as required by NCAA rules. Dunkley caught one pass for 10 yards Saturday.

He caught a 52-yard touchdown in USF's fourth-quarter comeback win at Nevada last month.

INJURY UPDATE: USF was already without top WR Sterling Griffin, lost to a season-ending knee injury, and the Bulls are waiting to learn the severity of a hand injury that true freshman D'Vario Montgomery suffered Saturday

Holtz said QB B.J. Daniels has an ankle injury but practiced through it Sunday and should be fine for Saturday's game at Temple. LBs Reshard Cliett (hamstring) and Tashon Whitehurst (knee) also suffered injuries Saturday. Holtz said he doesn't know if they will miss any time.
