USF linebacker Mompremier might be out for season

CINCINNATI — Senior LB Brouce Mompremier, who returned from a neck injury only to take another hit to his head Saturday at Louisville, might have played his last college game.

Coach Jim Leavitt said it is "doubtful" Mompremier, who did not play Thursday, will play again this season.

"I don't want to say for sure 'No,' " Leavitt said. "We'll just keep looking and seeing."

Mompremier momentarily lost feeling from his neck down after a collision during a win at Florida International last month and missed two games. He was cleared by doctors and returned for two games but took a blow to the back of his head Saturday against Louisville.

Defensive coordinator Wally Burnham said Saturday that Mompremier was physically okay but he worried about the psychological impact of another dangerous hit.

Mompremier, a vocal leader on defense who has started 18 games in four seasons, has 17 tackles this season.

MAKING A CHANGE: Last week, redshirt freshman Quenton Washington got his first start at cornerback, replacing an injured Jerome Murphy. But Thursday, Washington earned the start, getting the nod over Tyller Roberts, who started instead as the nickel defensive back.

MOVING AROUND: USF tried a new wrinkle with DE George Selvie, using him regularly as a roving linebacker instead of lining him up in a three-point stance.

Selvie rushed from the middle on the Bearcats' second touchdown, leaving the middle of the field clear for a screen pass that WR Mardy Gilyard took 26 yards for a touchdown.

LOTS OF LOOKS: Trying to juggle injuries and young players, USF used three looks on the right side of the offensive line in the first half. It opened with freshman Danous Estenor getting his first start at right tackle, with sophomore Jake Sims at right guard.

On the second drive, senior Marc Dile, who missed most of Saturday's loss at Louisville with a toe injury, came in for Estenor. Two drives later, the Bulls brought in sophomore Zach Hermann, who had missed six games with a broken foot, at right guard and shifted Sims to right tackle.

LOCAL CONNECTION: USF's extra point in the first quarter featured two seniors making returns to the state where they played in high school. Long snapper Eric Setser hails from Richwood, holder Grant Gregory, also the backup quarterback, played in Athens, and his father, USF offensive coordinator Greg Gregory, coached at Ohio.

NOT HIM AGAIN: When CB Mike Mickens returned a Matt Grothe interception 58 yards to set up the Bearcats' first touchdown, it might have seemed familiar to Bulls fans. Last season, Mickens returned a Grothe interception 79 yards for a touchdown in Cincinnati's 38-33 victory.

BOLD CALL: USF, trying to jump-start its offense, went for it on fourth and 1 from its 33 in the first quarter. Grothe got 2 yards on a keeper, but the drive stalled when Grothe was sacked on third down from the Cincinnati 37.
