Heisman watch

5. San Diego State RB Rashaad Penny: The Aztecs replaced the NCAA's all-time leading rusher with Penny, who leads the nation with 588 yards through three weeks.

4. Louisville QB Lamar Jackson: Finished with 400 total yards and three scores against Clemson, but it's hard to see him getting back in the race after last week.

3. Oklahoma State QB Mason Rudolph: Or his top receiver, James Washington. Both are legit All-America candidates.

2. Penn State RB Saquon Barkley: His toughest test so far comes at Iowa — always a tough place to play.

1. Oklahoma QB Baker Mayfield: Ten touchdowns, no interceptions and a matchup against a Baylor team that might be the worst in the Power Five.

Local of the week

Toledo WR Diontae Johnson (Lennard High): The sophomore ranks 12th nationally in yards per catch (24.8) with three touchdowns over the last two games. He won't match those numbers against Miami, but the high-powered Rockets offense could challenge a Hurricanes defense that went more than a week without practicing together because of Hurricane Irma.

Cowboy D

It looks as if Oklahoma State has learned how to play defense, too. The Cowboys have a defensive touchdown in each of their first three games and have yet to give up a point in the first quarter. QB Kenny Hill and the rest of the Horned Frogs will try to change that in a pivotal early Big 12 battle.

Simmons' second chance

Remember Jeffery Simmons, the five-star recruit who was filmed pummeling a woman before arriving at Mississippi State? He has become one of the best defensive linemen in the SEC. He's coming off a career-best seven-tackle performance at LSU and leads the nation with two blocked kicks entering Saturday's top-25 matchup against Georgia. LT Isaiah Wynn (Lakewood High) and the rest of the Bulldogs' line will have to try to contain him to avoid the upset.

By the numbers

316 Carries needed by Notre Dame RB Josh Adams to pass 2,000 yards. That's the fastest in school history, breaking the mark set by George Gipp

192 Consecutive passes without an interception by N.C. State QB Ryan Finley (the longest active streak in the country)

1 Gators with pick-sixes in back-to-back games (since 1980): Freshman DB C.J. Henderson

36 Career touchdowns for N.C. State ATH Jaylen Samuels. He can line up anywhere, making him the offensive equivalent of FSU do-it-all defender Derwin James

165.6 Career passer rating for Toledo QB Logan Woodside. Only Oklahoma Baker Mayfield has a better mark (among active players)
