Florida senior pitcher Stephen Locke, a former King High standout, was arrested by Gainesville police Saturday morning and charged with driving under the influence.
Locke, 22, was driving erratically on W University Avenue just after 2 a.m. Saturday, according to a police report. The Mercury SUV he was driving was traveling at more than 10 mph below the speed limit, the report said.
Locke crossed the double yellow line into oncoming traffic, forcing another vehicle to swerve to avoid a head-on collision, the report said. He later crossed back into his own lane then drove into a bike lane.
When a GPD officer stopped Locke, who was wearing an armband from a local bar called the Grog House, alcohol could be smelled on his breath, according to police, and his speech was slurred. Locke refused a field sobriety test and was arrested and taken to the Alachua County Jail.
Locke had 12 starts for the Gators last season, second on the team. He was 5-2 with a 3.17 ERA in a career-high 21 appearances.
Bulls pick up tackle
TAMPA — USF, seeking to replace four senior starters on the offensive line, picked up an oral commitment from 6-foot-7, 305-pound tackle Carlos Savala from the College of the Desert (community college) in California. Savala, who had Hawaii and Kansas among his finalists, committed during a home visit from USF coach Jim Leavitt and receivers coach Mike Canales. He is rated as a three-star recruit by Rivals.com and Scout.com.
