FSU beats Clemson in ACC baseball tournament

DURHAM, N.C. — DJ Stewart hit a two-run triple in Florida State's three-run third inning to lead the Seminoles to a 3-1 victory over Clemson in the ACC baseball tournament Wednesday.

Quincy Nieporte followed Stewart with an RBI single for the Seminoles (38-19), who had three hits for the game. Boomer Biegalski (6-4) earned the win, allowing four hits in 6⅓ scoreless innings.

"Obviously it was the Boomer Biegalski Show, and DJ picked us up with the big hit," FSU coach Mike Martin said.

The Tigers were limited to one run when they loaded the bases in the seventh and eighth innings, then Billy Strode struck out Steven Duggar to end it with the tying run at first.

Tonight in Pool A, FSU faces North Carolina at 7.

Miami rallied past Virginia 9-5. David Thompson hit a go-ahead two-run single in the eighth for the Hurricanes (43-13), who play North Carolina State on Friday in Pool B. Brian Garcia earned the win, while Alec Bettinger took the loss.

AAC tournament: Charlie Yorgen's two-out RBI single sent East Carolina to a 4-3 win against UCF at Bright House Field in Clearwater. The Knights (31-26) face UConn at 11 a.m. today in an elimination game. The Huskies lost to Tulane 3-1. USF, which won its opener Tuesday over Memphis 10-6, plays Houston at 3 p.m. today.

Tennis

WACO, Texas — USF's Roberto Cid lost in the opening round of the NCAA tournament, 6-2, 7-6 (7-1) to Georgia's Austin Smith. Cid ended his junior season with a 25-10 overall singles record. In women's singles, Florida's Belinda Woolcock defeated Peperdine's Lorraine Guillermo 6-2, 6-3.

Vandy women win title: Vanderbilt beat defending champion UCLA 4-2 Tuesday night for the women's team championship. Vandy's only other trip to the final was a loss in 2001.

Other sports

Basketball: Kentucky coach John Calipari signed a one-year extension through 2022 that will pay him $54 million. The contract, signed May 13, replaces the $52.5 million, seven-year agreement he signed in June. Already one of the highest-paid coaches, Calipari will receive $7 million next season with raises of $250,000 and $500,000 the next two years, respectively, then $8 million each over the final four seasons. He gets a $1.6 million longevity bonus July 1. … Wake Forest reinstated guard Madison Jones from an offseason suspension from all basketball-related activities.

Football: The Liberty Bowl, usually played in late December, is moving to Jan. 2 this season. The Memphis bowl features teams from the SEC and Big 12.

Softball: UF pitcher Lauren Haeger, Oregon pitcher Cheridan Hawkins and Michigan infielder Sierra Romero are finalists for player of the year.

Ex-player sues St. Joseph's: A former softball player at St. Joseph's claims in a lawsuit that sexually charged hazing made her contemplate suicide and quit the team. The federal lawsuit by the unidentified plaintiff against the university and coach Terri Adams alleges "a widespread and well-known culture of abusive and sexually charged hazing" on the team. The university declined comment.

Assistant resigns: Arizona assistant track coach Craig Carter, who was charged in connection with threatening a student-athlete with a box cutter, resigned. Carter, 47, pleaded not guilty at his arraignment on charges of stalking, interfering with an educational institution and two counts of domestic violence aggravated assault. Court records show Carter had been in a relationship with an unidentified track athlete. He allegedly threatened the woman with a box cutter while choking her and trying to drag her out of a classroom before she fled.
