FORT WORTH, Texas — Defending co-champion Florida advanced on Friday to the Super Six finals of the NCAA women's gymnastics championships, and UF senior Kytra Hunter shared the all-around title.
Florida, which has won consecutive team titles, and Utah tied at 197.475 points in the first session. Stanford finished at 197.175 to advance. Oklahoma (197.4), which shared the title with the Gators last year, advanced from the late session along with Alabama (197.1) and Auburn (197.075).
Former Olympian Samantha Peszek of UCLA tied Hunter for the all-around championship. Hunter also won the all-around as a freshman in 2012.
Utah's Georgia Dabritz had a 10 on uneven bars, the only perfect score of the day. Bridget Sloan of Florida, the 2014 bars champion, scored 9.95.
Death of Phillips' cellmate a homicide: The death of Damion Soward, who shared a prison cell with former Nebraska and NFL running back Lawrence Phillips, was ruled a homicide. Officials suspect Phillips, 39, who is in Kern Valley (Calif.) State Prison on domestic abuse, weapons and false imprisonment convictions. Soward, 37, was strangled, the Kern County Coroner's Office ruled.
Tennis: USF beat Temple 4-0 at the American Athletic Conference championships in Tulsa, Okla., and faces Memphis in today's semifinals. Roberto Cid, Justin Roberts and Vadym Kalyuzhnyy won in straight sets for the Bulls, who also earned the doubles point. … The Florida women routed Mississippi 4-0 in the quarterfinals of the SEC tournament in Columbia, S.C. Brooke Austin, Josie Kuhlman and Kourtney Keegan won in straight sets for the top-seeded Gators, who play Vanderbilt today. … The Florida men lost 4-3 to Mississippi State in the SEC quarterfinals in College Station, Texas. With the match tied at 3, UF's Chase Perez-Blanco lost to Rishab Agarwal in three sets.
Golf: Florida State was tied for fourth at par 428, nine strokes behind leader Virginia, after 27 holes at the ACC women's championships in Greensboro, N.C., with the final 27 holes scheduled today. The event was condensed from three days to two because of rain in Sunday's forecast. Matilda Casten and Alex Milan each were at 1-under, tied for 10th, for the Seminoles. … UF was tied for seventh at 282, 13 strokes behind leader Alabama, after one round of the SEC men's tournament in St. Simon Island, Ga. The Gators' Alejandro Tosti shot 3-under 69, tied for fifth.
ACC: Commissioner John Swofford said the league has no plans to move to three divisions even if leagues are no longer required to have two divisions or 12 teams to have a conference title game in football. He told espn.com that changing from two divisions is "not something we're discussing at all at this point. It just isn't."
