Tim Williams, who has moved into the starting lineup this season, might face internal discipline.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama linebacker Tim Williams has been charged with carrying a pistol without a permit.

Campus police arrested Williams on the misdemeanor charge at about 1 a.m. Thursday in his vehicle in a grocery store parking lot two days before the game with Kentucky.

Court documents show that officers smelled marijuana in Williams' parked car and found a bag containing the drug in the center console and a Glock 41 pistol under the driver's seat.

"This kind of behavior is not condoned in our program," coach Nick Saban said in a statement, adding that the team is "reviewing all of the information."

Williams had 10½ sacks last season without starting a game. He has been starting this season.

QB LEAVES TIDE: Alabama redshirt freshman quarterback Blake Barnett has left the program and withdrawn from school. Coach Nick Saban said he was disappointed in the decision of the five-star recruit from Corona, Calif., who started the opener against USC.

No. 6 HOUSTON 42, UCONN 14: QB Greg Ward accounted for five touchdowns as the Cougars (5-0, 2-0 AAC) avenged last season's upset by the Huskies (2-3, 0-2).

ASSAULT TRIAL: North Carolina linebacker Allen Artis, charged with misdemeanor sexual battery and assault on a student, is scheduled for trial in December.

DUKE: Leading rusher Jela Duncan will be out Saturday with an unspecified leg injury.

WISCONSIN: Kicker Rafael Gaglianone is out for the season after having back surgery.

ST. PETERSBURG — Saturday it was the soft underbelly of the bullpen that let one get away from the Rays, incurring the wrath of the team's faithful followers, who wondered why the high-leverage guys weren't pitching.

Rays closer Alex Colome, coming in with the score tied in the ninth, allows three runs in his second straight poor outing.
  3. Lightning among early suitors for defenseman Kevin Shattenkirk

    Lightning Strikes

  4. Roger Mooney's takeaways from Sunday's Rays-Orioles game

RHP Erasmo Ramirez is not happy about moving back to the bullpen, and can you blame him? But that's the best move for the Rays now. He can fill several roles: long man, setup man, even closer in a pinch. The Rays need to settle the bullpen, and Ramirez has proven he's capable of doing that.
