SEMINOLE — Heading into its matchup with Gulf Beaches in the District 5 11-12 (major) baseball semifinal, Seminole had scored 69 runs and given up just nine in four tournament games.
Seminole didn't have quite that level of success against Gulf Beaches on Tuesday but came through with the victory, prevailing 7-3 to advance to the 11-12 baseball final today against Northeast.
Stephen Pedrick got the offense started early for Seminole with a two-run home run in the first inning. The home run was the sixth of the tournament for Pedrick and 15th total for Seminole. An error later in the inning allowed Seminole to score another run, making it 3-0.
Northeast 2, Cross Bayou 1
In the other District 5 11-12 semifinal, the pitching combination of Ryan Taylor and Bobby Sulte limited Cross Bayou to one run on six hits to punch Northeast's ticket to the final.
Taylor started for Northeast and held Cross Bayou scoreless until running into trouble in the third inning when he loaded the bases after retiring the first two batters. Sulte came on in relief and struck out the Cross Bayou batter on three pitches.
Northeast scored both its runs in the third inning. Cross Bayou made things interesting in the sixth and final inning after Michael Olsen's infield single scored Zach Adams to bring Cross Bayou to within a run. With two outs and a runner on first, however, Taylor caught a sharp liner from his shortstop position for the final out.
District 5, 9-10 softball championship
Pinellas Park won its first-ever district title in 9-10 softball with a 4-2 victory over Seminole.
Amanda Ross had 10 strikeouts for Pinellas Park and was the winning pitcher. Ross also batted in one of Pinellas Park's runs.
Kelsey Vanderveer, who threw a no-hitter against Northeast in the tournament semifinal, had an RBI for Pinellas Park, as did Zoey Ledford.
